He was able to conduct the entire robbery from behind the scenes by playing with the mind of the police and tricking them to do exactly what he wanted. For us, it is complicated. We think it improbable to be out of the picture considering it can never happen, but Sherlock says otherwise. For this elimination of possibilities, your observation power will come to great use.
